Growl on mac

Hi!

Anyone know how to get growl to notify the user who sends a render job when its done and not the renderclient locally?
Using osx 10.6.5 and the demo of deadline 4 sp1.

Regards, Lars

Hi Lars,

Deadline uses the Machine specified in the user’s settings to determine where to send the Growl notification. To view the User Settings, open up the Deadline Monitor, enter super use mode, and then select Tools -> Manage Users. Select a user from the list on the left, and then look at the Machine setting under the Notification Settings. If this is one of the render nodes, that could explain the problem.

I removed the user with the renderclient and it worked.

But im a bit confused. Say that I want to create a small renderfarm that uses desktop computers that people use in the daytime and at night its a renderfarm. Then I have to mix rendernodes with users. Is that impossible for growl to work on that setup??

Hi Lars,

With the growl notifications, we assume that the user wants the notification sent to their workstation, which should be the machine they specify in their user settings. In the case where a render client is also a workstation, how are you wanting to notify the user? On their mobile? On another machine? Perhaps I just need more information on what you’re trying to do.

Setup:

User1/Render client1 (computer1)
User2/Render client2 (computer2)
User3/Render client3 (computer3)

3 users sitting together, each with their own computer. One of the guys wants to use the other two computers after hours as render slaves for big jobs.

Lets say that User1 got a long render and wants to use the other two machines monday night (when user 2+3 is not present) and sends a job to the two Render Clients 2+3. On thuesday User 2 got a long render and wants to use Render client 1 + 3.

I quess its a mixed user/client setup and maybe that can’t be done?

And i want a growl notification on the client computer which sent the job.

That setup is perfectly fine. It’s very common to include workstations in the render farm when they are sitting idle. The growl notification shouldn’t be a problem either. You should have three users in Deadline, and each should have their corresponding machine specified in the Machine setting. For example:

User1 - computer1
User2 - computer2
User3 - computer3

Regardless of where User1 submits their job from, the growl notification will be sent to computer1, because that’s what is defined in their user settings.

Now, based on your last sentence, it sounds like a user isn’t tied to a machine. If that is the case, then the growl notification won’t really work for you because Deadline assumes users are tied to machines. However, that won’t prevent you from using the setup you’ve described to render, and perhaps you could use email instead for notifications?
