Houdini Setup - Render Node specifics

Hi everyone,

I’m currently using Cinema4D successfully with Deadline for my rendering tasks. We have a farm of 25 machines with multiple GPUs. However, we are now transitioning to Houdini and need some assistance with the setup process. Specifically, I’m looking for guidance on a few things.

I am aware of how C4D licensing works. We have a total of 15 Maxon One licenses then cover the rest with purchased/rented render licensing from Maxon.

With Houdini, how does this work? We have two seats of Houdini FX and are looking to use Deadline for the rest of the computers as render nodes.

I have looked between SideFX forums and here but seem to still be confused on best steps and if it’s possible to have both these programs running on the same machines.

  1. How do we license render nodes for Houdini?
  2. What does this look like on the Render computers? (With C4D we use commandline and Maxon application for the render nodes for Redshift and Red Giant)
  3. Is this downloading Houdini fully but not licensing the application to then be used as a Render node?

Apologies if these have been asked before/information is available. Just lost at this point.

If you render with Houdini you need a Houdini Engine license, and a Karma, Redshift etc license.
If you want to process simulations etc, you need a Houdini Engine license.

You can skip the HoudiniEngine requirement part by using the export option to submit Mantra IFD’s, Karma USDs, Redshift .RS etc via a standalone render, Deadline has this option built in.

If you have Indie licenses you can request free engine license, if you have the full version you need to pay for additional HoudiniEngine licenses

You download and install the full version, with required plugins (Labs, Redshift, MOPs etc), Deadline will submit the job to them.

You can license the renders with UBL licenses if you prefer (except Karma)
