Licensing
There are two options for licensing Deadline 8.0:
- Usage based licensing, which requires a URL and an Activation Code, as well as an internet connection. These licenses will only work with 8.0, but if you have existing floating licenses for 7.x or earlier, you can continue to use them separately.
- Floating beta licenses, which require a FlexLM license server. These licenses are backward compatible, so if you have an 8.0 beta license, you can use it to run Deadline 7.x and earlier.
During this beta, we encourage everyone to use usage based licensing so that we can test this new system as much as possible. We will provide discount codes for the Thinkbox Store (store.thinkboxsoftware.com/) so that credits can be “purchased” at no cost. If usage based licensing simply isn’t an option for you (ie: your render nodes don’t have internet access), then we can issue you regular floating licenses instead.
To request licenses for Deadline 8, please send the following information to sales@thinkboxsoftware.com:
- Include “Requesting Deadline 8.0 Beta license.” in both the message subject and message body.
- The license type (USAGE BASED or FLOATING).
For FLOATING licenses, please include the following:
- The FlexLM server machine name.
- Physical Ethernet address (NIC address) of the FlexLM server computer.
- The number of licenses you require.
Note that only the Deadline Slave application requires a license. Licenses are not required for monitoring or submitting jobs to the queue.
Compatibility
Because Deadline 8.0 is a major upgrade, you will need to install a new Repository and Database, and you will need to reinstall the Client software. This is necessary because there are often breaking changes between major releases. Do not install over an existing installation unless it’s the same major version, or there could be unexpected results. Refer to the Installation -> Upgrading Deadline section in the Deadline 8.0 user manual, which can be downloaded from the same location as the beta installers.

The system requirements for Deadline 8.0 are the same as Deadline 7.x. Please refer to the Installation -> System Requirements section in the Deadline 8.0 user manual, which can be downloaded from the same location as the beta installers.
