Instancing amazon servers - how to ?

Heya

Is there any info as to how to actually set it up and make it work? I’m scratching my head but I thing I’ll reach my kidneys b4 I figure it out lol…

Here’s a good tutorial: http://www.judpratt.com/tutorials/ec2-renderfarm/
It’s pretty long but definitely worth it.

We don’t have any docs for this yet. You’ll need to have your EC2 account set up, and you’ll need to create an instance so that it shows up in Deadline. Deadline can only control and clone existing instances. it can’t create a new instance from scratch.

But how do you link your cloud instances to deadline?

Under the Security Credentials section of your EC2 account page, you need to create an access key. This will give you an Access Key ID and a Secret Key.

In the Monitor, while in super user mode, select Tools -> Configure Cloud Settings. Select the appropriate EC2 location, and enter your Access Key ID and a Secret Key.

Heya

Right so I got that set up but none of my instances pop up… I guess I have to install Deadline on them 1st right?
Now I installed Deadline and specify my repository to my home HDD - I’m using VPN.
The problem is that the mongoDB give me an error because Deadline slave cant find it.

How can I fix it?

Ass to Access Key ID and Secret Key - what are they ? I just 2x click on short cut to enter instance and my Secret Key is my new password…

Thanks, bye,

The Cloud list is separate from the Slave list in the Monitor. The Cloud list will show any instances that exist, regardless of whether or not Deadline is running on them. You won’t be able to see your instances in this list until you configure your cloud settings in the Monitor.

Are these cloud slaves or local slaves? Can you ping the machine running mongodb from the slave machines? If the host name doesn’t work, try the IP address.

After logging into our EC2 account, I select the My Account Console drop down and choose Security Credentials. There is an Access Credentials section where I can create a new Access Key. I can then retrieve my Access Key ID and Secret Access Key.

Lovely got it to work !

Now second question. How do I manage textures? I do not want to send my 4gb project to 50 slaves 1 by 1 from my end… it will take hours…(I mean Days.) what are my solutions?

Thanks, bye.

Chris covered this a bit here:

Currently, we don’t have anything in place to deal with textures. This will probably change in the future, but for now it is up to you to manage them. One idea could be to keep copies of all your textures on cloud storage, and then have your scenes point to them. For example, if you have all of your textures on T: locally, then you could map a T: on your cloud instances to point to your cloud storage. If you are submitting a scene that needs a texture you don’t have uploaded yet, you would have to upload that first.

Heya

I ended up using FTP and automatic sync to mirror files I need and so on. Quick and painless. No need to manual manage except for the ftp. I’m hopping I can tell deadline to save renders to FTP.

Anyway how are we standing with Cluster Compute Amazon Linux AMI 2012.03 instances. Are they supported?

Thanks, bye.
