Hi guys,
As someone who has been involved in software, I fully understand the need to protect the product, but can I suggest that perhaps a license check at the beginning of a render, maybe even one at the end, would be enough?
Our license server went offline for just a few minutes and 330 nodes dropped what they were doing, including renders that had, in some cases, been going for ten hours and more.
One of those things that’s always going to happen sooner or later, so it would be nice to see it handled a little more forgivingly.
Simon
Hi Simon,
I’m sorry to hear this affected you so badly. We have a 20 minute grace period before the slaves start to shutdown, but we have been discussing looking at re-evaluating our licensing scheme for the next MAJOR Deadline release, and checking for a license at the time the slave goes to checkout a task is definitely something we’re considering.
In the meantime, you might consider using a 3-server redundancy system, which is supported by flexlm. Essentially, you run 3 license servers (on 3 different machines) instead of 1. As long as 2 of the 3 servers are online, the system will continue to serve licenses. If this is something you’re interested in, please contact sales@thinkboxsoftware.com for more info.
Cheers,
Hi Russell,
Last thing I want is to make anyone feel bad - it’s just one of those inevitable facts that what can go wrong, will, and usually at the most inopportune time!
I’m just putting this out there as something to ponder.
Simon
