Possible workaround - Matte Objects are supposed to support the Opacity channel of the material (for example you can map a black and white texture map and the black pixels will appear cut out).
So you can just animate the Opacity of a Standard material to 0 and the Matte will disappear.
Good to know. I worked around by moving them out of the frame, but the opacity is cool to know for fading. Thanks!
