I am having some trouble with matte objects.
using;
Max 8
xp 64
4 gigs ram
Krak 9.8 and 9.6
in 9.8 they dont seem to work at all,
in 9.6 im am getting some sort of Ram leak.
when hitting render the ram just goes up an up till max crashes.
Disable matte objects and it renders fine.

but I am getting crashes in 9.6 as well now!
Wait for 0.9.9 (should be out either today or tomorrow) and see if it still causes memory leaks - the feature itself works now, the question is whether it works with your particular geometry.
If it still runs out of memory in 0.9.9, you might have to send us a sample scene with some geometry that causes the problem.

I actualy resolved the problem (at least in 9.6)
I had a fairly simple mesh (8000 polys), with a volume select applied and a few other modifiers.
these were used to animate a crack across the surface of the mesh
I point cached out the mesh and they now render
with a very low memory footprint.
