maya set project vs. scene file location for output

I’m not sure this is as much a bug as a workflow issue. Our pipeline tools don’t require anyone to set their project for maya, and so artists never think about it. So when I open a file, select my particles for partitioning, I expect Krakatoa to take the file’s location as the base for where the PRT folder should be for output, as well as when I click on the PRT loader dialog. If this doesn’t seem like a useful option, then perhaps the ability to feed these locations as an option when opening the tools via script? Just kicked out several caches over the night that I then had to hunt down the PRT folders the exports resided in. I’m sure with proper rest and sleep…oh, who am I kidding.

We were hoping to use maya’s project directory as the default location for everything just to be consistent.

Maybe we could do something “smart” where it would use default maya’s project paths if the scene file was saved somewhere within the project path base. Then if it wasn’t saved there, it would default to the path to the maya file.

Do you think that would work for everyone?

sorry for the delayed response…

Yes, the way our pipeline works, it’s assumed the project path is the maya folder above the currently open maya scene file. I think this would be a good default.

That’s my $0.02
