I’m a little confused, but with MayaCMD, submitted either directly from within Maya2008 or from the monitor submission script, the “render.exe” is correctly targeted, but the MayaBatch.exe is still executed, even though I have NOT checked the MayaBatch checkbox in either submission script interface!

See the log report above which states this as a “STDOUT:” message!
Is this right? Because, we are getting frames appearing darker on the deadline slaves, compared to a local straight Maya2008 render without using the MayaBatch.

Thanks,

Hey Mike,

Render.exe, which is used by the MayaCmd plugin, actually starts up MayaBatch.exe. This is normal. If you ran a command line render with Render.exe from a DOS prompt, you would see the same behavior.

Thanks for the info, Ryan.
I’ve been led to belief that it is still possible to execute the render.exe but without the Mayabatch.exe being executed.
I was told that Smedge had a way of doing this and led to a more stable network rendering solution for Maya over the network.
This information might well be based on older versions of Maya, circa, v5-7…
In my tests, I totally agree, that Mayabatch.exe always gets executed, unless of course, you render from Maya locally, in which case, just the Maya.exe is used.
Is my work colleague incorrect or am I missing something here…?..!

Either way, we are still getting darker frames over the network then locally. Do you know of any gamma issues across the network in Maya?

Thanks,
Mike

I’m not aware of a way to do this. Render.exe actually creates a melscript in the machine’s temp directory, and then calls mayabatch.exe to execute that script. So I’m not sure how this could work without running mayabatch.exe. It’s quite possible though that this was how things worked in older versions, although I just tested this with Maya 7 and render.exe started up mayabatch.exe.

Not that I know of. This is the first we’ve heard of such a problem. Can you create a very simple test scene that reproduces the problem and post it? We could use that to try and figure out what’s going on.

Cheers,

  • Ryan
