MayaBatch Vray issues

Hey guys,
Looking for a little guidance
We are using Vray in Maya 2014 with no issues. In our environment, I am using a network path for our Maya plugins, and using Vray docs to get the plugin to work via the network

I can successfully load Maya and choose the Vray renderer, and render locally in Maya with no issues, The problem arrises when we use deadline, and it launches Maya from a network path as well, but for some reason always errors out and says

However, with all the same environmental variables, I can load Vray on the same system the deadline slave is launching, and get vray to work.

The only difference is that I am launching Maya from the network in deadline as opposed to the local box when working locally.

If I manually go to the location of Maya batch and launch, Itll load the Vrayformaya.mll and sit at the Mel prompt.

Any ideas?

My first random stab at it is that is that Deadline might be running as a service without the “S:” drive mapped. Do you want to give me a call here so we can hack at it before the weekend?

Deadline isnt running as a service, specifically told it not to, it launches as a user logs on.
And every user does have the S:\ drive mapped. I feel like there is some validity to what you are saying, but

Just tried you suggestion of killing launcher and slave and starting again with no luck, I will reboot tonight and see if that helps.

Any one know of a way to retrieve a slaves ENV VAR like using the SET command remotely via the Monitor?

I haven’t seen this one before, so adventures for everyone! (I was hoping it’d be the environment).

I think you confirmed the mapped drive goodness, so that’s probably not the issue… Deadline shouldn’t be too clever with the environment stuff either.

I’m hoping 6.0 had the option to specify custom environments in the job properties. It’s likely in 6.1, but it’d be handy for playing with the environment of a job.

You should also be able to throw a “cmd /c set” command script job to get the environment Deadline’s got for jobs if you want to cross-reference stuff.

“cmd /c set” as a job is the way I do it. If you need details, lemme know.

So after running the CMD /c set command on my workstation, it spit back the same results as if manually went to my command prompt and pushed the SET command.

That being said, I went ahead and rebuilt all my env vars to point a new directory.
Fired up Maya locally, and was able to render with Vray locally.
Closed Maya, and fired up Maya from the network, and was able to load vray plugin and render succesfully.
I then opened a command prompt and issued a render.exe -name of maya file (of a known vray maya scene) and it successfully loaded the plugin and rendered the frame, Awesome! The render.exe is the network version , not on my C:\ drive
Sent the exact same scene to deadline, and told it to do a mayabatch as well as a mayacmd and they both error out, however I am a little further, now the error seems to be

Again, but If I launch this via the command promt from the exact same place on the network, I can get it to render no problem

I just wanted to check that you are logged in as the same system user account that runs DeadlineSlave on that machine that is failing? Sometimes the user account being tested with doesn’t have the right permissions to a file or something. Thanks.

That latest error you posted sounds like a version conflict of some kind – ie, Maya is trying to load a version of Vray that was built for a newer/older version of Maya (or different bitness, maybe).

Do you have multiple version of Maya configured to run with Deadline? Can you confirm that you were testing with the same version of Maya that the Slave said it was using in its logs (looks like 2014 from that first post)?

It’s also possible that the Slave is mucking up some environment variables that Maya relies on, we’ve definitely had clients experience similar issues in the past. I’ll poke around some more to see if I can find anything else in that vein that I think might be relevant…

Yes I am using the same version of Maya and the Vray plugin across all our systems Maya 2014 I just confirmed that this is the same version that sits on my local C:\ and the network path

The deadline logs show its loading the exact same plugin in the exact same path as my local commandline render. both running render.exe from my local C:\ drive and the network path.

So I thought a version mismatch too, but I can also launch the render.exe for maya that is located on the network (same place Deadline is launching it from) and it is able to run via the commandline and render successfully!

So i feel like the Env Vars are being picked up, as it would be the only way that Maya knows where to even look for the plugin files. but for whatever reason its throwing back that it could not be loaded

I remember reading somewhere it has to do with forcing a build in the submitter? but even setting that to None doesn’t seem to change anything. Ive tried 32 and 64bit.

Something Im noticing is the render argument for slave,It is throwing

When I invoke the Vray renderer via command line, I am just using

 render.exe path\to\scene.mb

Not specifying the -r argument or anything…

And just now I tried passing the -r vray argument to my local renders and they still go without issue.

I just wanted to verify that in your testing from the command line you are throwing the full render arguments that we are. What we use is:

“U:\BNR_Apps\MAYA2014\bin\Render.exe” -r vray -threads 0 -x 640 -y 480 -rd “S:/Graduates/SahamAli/New_Project/images” -im “testvray” -proj “S:/Graduates/SahamAli/New_Project” “C:\Users\sahamali\AppData\Local\Thinkbox\Deadline6\slave\DS-SAHAM\jobsData\testvray.mb”

And if your testing isn’t using the same string, it’s not truly verifying the command. Now, if that full line doesn’t work, we can try to pull pieces to see if there is one of the arguments that is causing this issue, since the job renders when you run it without all that. Can you let me know for sure? Thanks!
