Memory Usage / Memory Leak?

Just wanted to ask about a specific memory behavior that’s really started to hurt me.

When I’ve been in a scene trying to dial in lighting density / materials, I’ve noticed I have about 10 renders to go (sometimes less) until I reach a Bad Alloc error.

I made a point of observing memory usage while working on a current scene and noticed that the amount of initial available memory would consistently decrease after each render. Finally I’d run out, maybe get a “virtual memory low - increase page file” warning, get the Bad Alloc, and had to restart Max.

Does memory usage like this indicate a memory leak? Or just a bad setting somewhere on my part that’s preventing memory from getting freed up?

I think maybe the PCache and LCache options have helped preventing this from happening as frequently, but there are some times you can’t use those options and having to restart after every 10 or so renders is such a pain…

(PC Spec - Max8, 4GB, 64-bit windows)

I have noticed the same thing in multiple builds of krakatoa.

Out of curiosity, were you also using Max 8 or Max 9 32 or 64?

I haven’t seen the leak, but I have gotten the part where Bad Alloc doesn’t release memory, so you have to restart max.

  • Chad

at work though, have not noticed as much.

max 8 xp 64, but not pushing as hard on that box.
