We reset our Pools and Groups structure a couple of weeks ago, and since then have noticed that if we pick up 3D Studio Max jobs from before that change, we don’t see any of the Pools and Groups. These jobs are being submitted out of the application via SMTD, and the Sanity Check doesn’t seem to help. The Pools and Groups window just comes up with blanks, so what the guys are doing now is submitting and going into the Monitor and setting he options there. But if they forget the jobs wander around our farm for a while erroring out on all the OSX slaves, etc.
Is there an option in the Max SMTD we can re-trigger or a preference we need to delete on the Repository?
thanks,
Lang
Hi Lang,
That’s a strange one. I would expect that restarting 3dsmax would be enough to load in the new pools and groups.
Can you open one of these scenes in Max, launch SMTD, and then use the log button at the bottom to collect the log and send it to us? We can see if any errors are occurring that would explain the problem.
Thanks!
Hi Ryan - here’s a copy of the log file. Doesn’t look like any errors though. And we’re restarted our DL Repo server and are still having the problem:

Thanks for the log! It’s showing that it’s collecting a single pool and a single group (probably the ‘none’ pool and group). In the drop downs in SMTD, are you at least seeing these ‘none’ pool and groups?
SMTD (like the rest of our submitters), use the following command lines to get the pools groups. Maybe you can try opening a command prompt on your workstation and run the following commands, just to confirm that they match what you see in SMTD:
deadlinecommand.exe -pools
deadlinecommand.exe -groups
Finally, can you maybe send us a screen shot of the Manage Pools dialog and the Manage Groups dialog in the Monitor. We just want to see what deadlinecommand.exe should be printing out for these lists.
Thanks!
Hi Ryan - we do see only the “none” pools & groups from some projects. From new projects created since we restructured the pools and groups everything looks right. But some old projects show the pool & group structure from when they were created - others just show “none”. It’s very odd …
We opened one project that was showing an old set of pools and groups and then ran the commands you sent in the command prompt, which gave the correct results (see screen shot attached).
Attached are also screenshots of the manage pools and groups screens form the monitor, where everything looks correct.
Old projects seem to have a Pools&Groups preference cached which is not updating form the current querry … ??
thanks, Lang
IIRC, there was a bug in Grant’s code which got pool and group names the wrong way round?
Thanks for the screen shot! I didn’t realize you were using RPM.
I wonder if RPM caches the Deadline submission settings with jobs (including the pools and groups list). We’ll take a look at Deadline’s RPM scripts and see if this is something we have control over.
Cheers,
Hey Ryan - I don’t think the problem is just with RP Manager. I’ll look into it a bit more tomorrow and confirm though. cheers, Lang
Cool. If it turns out to be a general SMTD problem (and not specific to RPM), it might be easier to track down!
Cheers,
I’ll need to follow up on this next week - our lead 3d guy is away until Monday. cheers, Lang
