Problems with Fusion Render Node

Hi all,

I’m having problems getting Fusion working with Deadline on linux, spec below…

centOS 7.4 (minimal)
deadline 10.0.9.4
fusion 9.0.2

I can render my test comp fine from the command line…

There’s a lot of reference to not being able to write log files. I had assumed this would be the problem and related to permissions. Two key lines I think…

… and can’t see anything wrong. fusion tells me it’s launching as root. Root has access to all directories/files. As I say, I can render this comp from the command line so clearly I’m missing something on the dl side.

Hey Jan,

Can you take a look at the processes on your linux node and see if there is a fusion render process running? It could be that you have Fusion installed as a daemon which is causing Deadline to fail when trying to start the process because of one already existing.

Fusion Render Node isn’t active. Fusion Server is, I presume that’s normal to facilitate licensing. Fuscript is too, I don’t really understand what that does.

I can run the comp from the command line which presumably would also fall over if fusion was already active as a daemon?

That node will not process the same comp file through deadline. The Fusion Render Node starts loading then fails.

Also I’m deliberately not running the launcher (and presumably hence the slave) as a daemon.

This was causing Fusion to fail with a QXcbConnection: Could not connect to display error.

Hey Jan,

Taking a look at your process list I do see fuscript running. This is the same executable we are attempting to launch at render time. Can you make sure that it is not running when you submit.

For “QXcbConnection: Could not connect to display error.” Is this a headless or GUI render node? Do you have a full job report for this submission?

Hi Charles,

I’m running centOS 7.4 minimal, so no GUI. Had to run Xorg and set the env variable DISPLAY=:0 to run Fusion Render Node with a dummy driver, presumably to handle GUI elements of the app. I presume this isn’t the problem as that error no longer appears and I can render the comp from the command line no problem. There’s a full job report in an earlier post.

I try to kill fuscript but it’s parent process is active so it lists as defunct. I attempt to kill it’s parent process, FusionServer, at the same time and it simply starts back up again. FusionServer parent process is systemd so I guess that’s running as a daemon? Is this my problem? It seems fuscript is being executed by FusionServer, presumably something to do with licensing.

The report shows a bunch of errors to do with writing job files. Is that a red herring?

I do see the failed attempts to access the fusion log. Which makes sense if fusion is failing to start. I’d try stopping the daemon to see if it resolves the issue. I have seen fuscript process affect customers previously.

To my considerable surprise I can still render the comp from the command line. I’d assumed that the license check would fail but it seems it will load FusionServer on demand…

Note that I’ve created a wrapper for FusionRenderNode that sits in the same directory, purely to set env variables. It works as I’ve used it in the command line example above and it looks like this…

If you take a look in root/Thinkbox/Deadline10/slave/x40/jobsData/5a5754ec7be4ec2290c92049/ are any files actually being written? Specifically the fusion.log file?

Throwing my thoughts in here now…

The command we’re passing to Fusion is pretty simple. With the batch mode enabled, we’re launching it like this from the command line:

"/opt/BlackmagicDesign/FusionRenderNode9/FusionRenderNode" /quiet /listen /verbose /log "/tmp/fusionLog_tempxsl2K0/fusion.log"

That seems to be what should be generating the log for us and I’m wondering what it’s exit code is. Could you run it and then immediately after run this guy:

echo "Exit code was $?"

That should let us know if it’s segfaulting or not. Also, it might be helpful if you print the environment in your wrapper script so we can compare what your shell has set and what Deadline does. It wouldn’t be the first time some inconsistency has caused us problems :slight_smile:

I don’t know if this helps but I ran the same command but provided a comp for it. It rendered but did not generate a log file…

Did that test run create a log as “/tmp/fusionLog_tempxsl2K0/fusion.log”? I forgot to ask that specifically. I guess checking the exit code of your script might be good from a comparison.

My goal here is to try and understand if there is any difference between running the command outside of Deadline versus inside. It’s fairly common that there is some missing or different environment variable that causes issues here. To that end I had a pretty good talk with a developer about how this magic works, and it may be possible to run everything without logging…

An interesting workaround for now, have you tried running the non-batch mode for the time being? You’ll see it at the bottom of the submitter as “Command line Mode”:

Hi Edwin,

Does command line mode use the FusionCmd plugin? From memory is this consoleslave.exe on windows? I’m a bit fuzzy as I can’t dial into the office this evening to check but I didn’t think there was an equivalent on linux. I believe I looked at this and there wasn’t a default linux executable path for that plugin in deadline and I couldn’t find anything to run in the default fusion install location.

I could very well be wrong about that. It might be tricky to look at this tomorrow but I’ll try.

A call to discuss monday would be fantastic. I’ll follow this up with an email on the support request.

Nuts. It looks like you’re right. At least I’m fixing my assumptions on Fusion here. :smiley:

Okay, well we’ll poke at this Monday and see if we can figure it out. The guess on our side at the moment is that Fusion is somehow crashing within Deadline at some point and the lack of log is actually unrelated.

Quick update for everyone here. We’ve found that at least when running the FusionCmd plugin, arguments need to start with “–” on Linux instead of the “/” you’d be used to on Windows. So, “/start 1” needs to be “–start 1”. Still trying to figure out the Fusion Rendernode + FUScript workflow though…
