Proxy support?

Hi guys, i just saw a interesting tutorial from Evermotions guys (vimeo.com/57124911) about proxy matte…

But  the things i do in naiad and fluids meshes have >10mil poly so its not good idea to use this method as a proxy, so is there a way, (hope no1 asked before) to add support for proxy files (vrmesh, alembic, xmesh etc…) to load in render time?

cheers

The Krakatoa SR renderer already supports XMesh and OBJ file sequences as matte objects. XMesh for Maya is coming along nicely, too.

Right now Krakatoa MY can use either scene geometry (including imported OBJs or XMesh MY Loaders), or DTEX maps.
Adding support for externally referenced mesh sequences would be possible, but I am not sure how useful it would be since you would not be able to see the mesh in the Maya views to position it correctly. Maya 2013 already supports Alembic, and that geometry would go into Krakatoa anyway if tagged as Matte (I assume, have not tested it).

I will log your wish, but the majority of our users have asked for DTEX as the external source of matte information, and loading 10M polygons shouldn’t be a problem for Maya, right?

Hi Bobo,

hehe (you dont wanna know, what maya can or cant),

well we r all aware that vray (at the moment) at top of renderers on the market and everywhere in production, there r also other renders also good, but thats not the point of the talk here

what i wanna to say, is i know Bobo, and all of ur team, the effort u give to cg world, but obj format is a long gone  and people dont use it that much…

i hope im not speaking only in my name, but most of the studios pipeline is based on a proxy, so the scenes should be that heavy (as we all know)…

so i think that most of the studios/cg artists will be happy if u have/can time to implement proxy’s (as matte) into krakatoa in rendertime, if i want something from a Santa for this New Year i would say it would be this

cheers

So when you say “proxy”, you mostly mean “vray proxy”? We need the clarify this first

Can you write in short sentences the typical workflow you envision using each option?
For example how Alembic or XMesh would be used in this scenario and what exactly does not work right now?
I know how XMesh would help and as I mentioned Krakatoa already supports it, but the “industry” does not use that (yet).

Hi Bobo,

yes i mean vray proxy (.vrmesh), but the same idea is for alembic too

sure, its simple…

in my case as a fluid artist workflow is like this:

  • after finishing simulation in (naiad, realflow) i convert all of my meshes -> .vrmesh
  • in most of the cases i have water with splash/foam particles that i render with krakatoa (logically  ) so i need the main mesh make a matte on krakatoa particles, depending on view and fluid motion

for example i have a water surface & boat, when the cam is high (bird view) there is no probl, but if the cam is low in water level, then u have waves that need to matte the particles behind them, and as i already said all of my fluids r proxy, so u see the probl

i know that every1 is waiting for deep pass but as far as i know only few renders supports this feature…

Bobo let me know if u need more info on anything

best regards & thx

That was very helpful, thanks. I will log it in the wishlist.

Thx Bobo
