max 2010 sp1 x64
Just a Teapot with PRT Volume, if I uncheck Enabled, the viewport generates no particles, but neither does the renderer. So I think it’s disabling both.

Tried in both Max 2010 sp1 x64 and Max 2011 sp1 x64 and I cannot repro that behavior. It renders for me regardless of the Enabled checkbox.
Hmmm… Wonder what’s going on then…
Here’s a simple file that shows the issue.
KrakatoaTeapot.rar (22.4 KB)
It seems to be related to the Viewport Display “Spacing” being disabled
If I enable Viewport Display “Spacing” and leave Viewport Display “Enabled” disabled I get a particle render
The PRT_volume seems to be holding on to some old settings too in your scene (i tried to adjust for out of mem errors, I only have 4gb on my laptop)
Haven’t looked at the file yet as I cannot download it without IT’s help (oh security!), but if you are using an object from an earlier version, it is possible for the paramblock to have become corrupted when we moved stuff around. Does it do the same with a freshly created PRT Volume as in the steps I posted?
Ok, looked at the file, seems that having Enabled and Spacing unchecked causes nothing to render. If I check Spacing OR Enabled, it starts rendering.
The Spacing checkbox should definitely not affect the rendering, so I will log this as a bug.
Thanks for reporting it!
This has been fixed in our internal build, also confirmed that the submitted scene is now rendering. Coming to you in the next Beta build (sometime before Siggraph).
