When a slave is rendering a tile, does it have the file open in Max? I mean, if I logged into the machine could I see the Max scene?

By default, Deadline opens max in slave mode, so while you will be able to see the frame buffer as it is rendering, you won’t actually see the max scene. Under the Render tab in the max submission script, there is an option to render in workstation mode. This will allow you to see the max scene, but it uses up a max license during rendering.
