this maybe a noob question, but installing the repository takes ages (like 20 minutes and counting), and I was wondering why?
I’m installing the repo on osx and just double clicked the installer for it. The usual window pops up saying “This can take a few minutes”, but almost half an hour before the actual install wizard kcicks in??
I had the same thign the last time I installed the repository as well. Is this to be expected?
I have only ben running a few nuke renders through Deadline and only have a single nuke job in the queue.
It’s be nice to actually see what exactly is going on if it takes this amount of time. Anything I can do to edbug this?
In general, we find the OSX installers to be the slowest of the three, but on the 3 different Macs we test on (10.6, 10.7, and 10.8), we’ve never experienced 20 minute installations.
I’ve found that installing from a network location is REALLY SLOW. If I copy it to a local disk and install it goes a good 10x faster. Might be related to your slowdown if you’re installing from a network share.
just a heads up that this is hapening again. I’m just trying to install the repository for build 051527 on osx and it’s been running for over an hour. Still saying “Unpacking Temprary Files. This can take a few minutes”.
Is there a way to debug what it’s actually doing - if anything?
Hi
I’m having this problem as well with the OSX installer. Ive found that the progress bar of the installer isn’t always updating properly. So hiding the installer window and the bringing it back in front will update the progress bar and usually reveal that the installer is much further into the process than the progress bar was showing. Ive had repo instal times that where over 3 hours. Even if the installer is running of the same disk that the repo is installed on. To me it seems to be more of a problem with the actuall instalsoftware when running on OSX.
Thanks for the reply, at least Im’ not alone.
I don’t even see any progress in the progress bar. Just crawling blue sirals.
It’s still going, and I guess I wll just leave it be and check back tomorrow morning.
During the unpacking stage, the repository installer is unpacking the Mono framework to /tmp/repoinstallttemp. This package is about 250 MB, so I can’t imagine why it would take so long. On our 3 test Macs (running 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8), we’ve never seen this process take more than a minute or two.
The mac installer does support doing a command line installation. Maybe you could try that, since it removes the UI from the equation. To view the available options, run the installbuilder.sh script from a terminal with the --help flag. The installbuilder.sh script can be found in the Contents/MacOS folder, which is inside the Mac Client Installer package.
So I came back this morning and the installer was still trying to unpack files (supposedly).
I killed it and used the commandline installer which worked a treat.
