Is it right that the main display render is so different from the Viewer output? I’m just noodling about at the moment, learning the app, but this seems too far away from the final result in terms of colour saturation and gran – even though the output is considerably smaller. Not sue if it’s abut or a limitation of C4D/Krakatoa (which I’m really going to like now I know what’s going on!)

I can’t seem to reproduce what you’re seeing. I would suspect it is the way the data is being displayed, and not the actual data. The Picture Viewer always matches the resulting EXR file in my tests. Is there a way for me to reproduce what you are seeing? I would like to try to figure out what is going on.
I think Manuel is referring to the differences between rendering in the Editor/Viewer directly and Rendering to the Picture Viewer.
Although in this example I feel like the result in the picture viewer looks correct. Probable the Render in the Editor Viewer can’t display 32bit properly?
I have to say, I deactivated linear colour, and the images (one in the main display window, the other in the Picture Viewer) still looked different. Perhaps there’s some limitation in the main viewer.
