Dears:
I was doing some research on the optimal configuration for render farms, and I ran into something that’s called “Render Farm Manager”, this manager had a dedicated hardware to run it?
Any ideas about why is that? and how may that impact Deadline’s render farm perfomance?
warmest regards,
Hi there,
Deadline’s “manager” is referred to as the Deadline Repository. The Repository is just a shared directory which stores data such as jobs, slave settings, network settings, etc, and the Deadline applications access this data via the shared path. Because this share is used by every machine in your render farm, we recommend using server to store the repository data. This could be the same server you use to store scene references like textures, footage, etc, for your render jobs, or if you have a larger render farm, you may want to use a dedicated server machine.
How big of a render farm (ie: how many render nodes and how many workstations) are you looking to set up? Usually, a dual core machine with 2GB RAM should be enough, but if you have a large render farm (ie: more than 50 or 100 machines), you may want to look at added more cores/RAM, or even looking into using solid state drives. A gigabit ethernet doesn’t hurt either.
Cheers,
I Gess our questions fit here…
We have a small company mostly rendering After Effects Comps.
Recently we received a Dell PowerEdge 1900 (Intel 2xQad) and we are thinking about get it to use as a server and start our first steps into a render farm envairment.
Our doubt is about initial choices.
- Should we use this PowerEdge as server or slave to take the best out of it.
- It is configured as RAID5 with a scusi controler - should we keep the RAID5 or set a RAID0 ?
The other machines we have:
1 AMD 2xDualCore - (used as editors for comps)
1 Intel DualCore - (use as editors for comps)
3 Intel Monocore - (used only as places to store files not in use for current production)
Could some one point us some directions on this subject?
Hi there,
I responded to your direct email. Hopefully I’ll have some additional info I can pass on to you soon.
