Scale Tool Button Keyboard shortkey R

On Manual R - Scale Tool, but R key go to perspective view and not toggle anymore

Yeah, we have trouble deciding which system to go with…
3D Studio DOS and 3ds Max have always used L/R/F/K/T/B for Left, Right, Front, Back, Top and Bottom. When Autodesk bought Alias, they started adding some Maya UI concepts into Max, and at some point R became Scale tool (because of the QWER row used for Select, Move, Rotate, Scale). As result, all view shortcuts EXCEPT for R were the old 3ds ones, and R was suddenly gone.

In the current Sequoia build, we don’t have a shortcut for Scale (and the Manual is thus wrong, my bad). This is because we felt that the user is more likely to use the viewport shortcuts than the Scale shortcut (how often do you scale using the Gizmo vs. entering values in the Transform rollout which gives you a lot more precise input?).

We are open to suggestions - do you expect R to switch to Scale mode? Do you use the viewport navigation shortcuts?
Some options are:

  1. have no shortcut for Scale
  2. have R for Scale and SHIFT+R for Right (but this would be then inconsistent with all other viewport navigation shortcuts)
  3. have no Right shortcut at all (which is now the case in 3dsMax since the QWER keys were added)
  4. move the select/move/rotate/scale/measure shortcuts a row up to 1,2,3,4,5 (this would be inconsistent with Max and Maya, but easy to learn)
  5. move the viewport navigation shortcuts to the numpad keys (as they define directions anyway, and even have a Home key for the Home view)
  6. something else?

For the next build, we are going to try plan 4):
` = Select By Name
1/2/3/4/5 = Select/Move/Rotate/Scale/Measure Mode
6/7/8 = World/Object/Camera Space

We will see how that feels…

Normally, 1234 method is vertex, edge, surface and etc… on other software and I like 3) method
and some times scale tool is useful to scale faster than type in.
That is my thoughts from different reverse engineering software…
they don’t have scale tool because engineer software and they don’t want to estimate a scale.

It is unlikely we will need Vertex/Edge/Face is Sequoia.
We might revisit these defaults before release.
The next step will be fully customizable keyboard shortcuts anyway…

Thanks for the feedback!
