Sequoia Build 0.4.0 (Beta 20) Crashes

Installed the latest beta version (Sequoia-0.4.0.ab31320-win64-install.zip) on my Dell T3610 system, Sequoia still crashes when clicking on “Create new Point Loader” on the top panel.

Questions -

  1. is this the right place to load a point cloud data file to mesh?
  2. is this a bug that causes it to crash? The error message is the usual “Sequoia.exe - has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly…”

Here are the system specifics - Dell Precision T3610, Xeon CPU E5-1620 @ 3.70Ghz, 32GB RAM, Win 7 Professional Service Pack 1, 64Bit, NVIDIA 2000 GPU.

Thanks George,

Hi!

Thanks for the report!
We have not heard of this type of crash yet.

You are using the correct feature. Regardless of what feature you used, it should not simply start working.
Have you tried creating any of the other object types? For example, create a Mesh Loader (4th icon from the left), pick some OBJ file exported from any 3D program, then create a Surface Points object from it and see if at any of these steps you will get the same crash.

I cannot tell you what the problem might be, but I think we should find a way to figure this out.
Half of the development team is in Vancouver, so in the worst case we might have to actually look at the machine

Let’s talk tomorrow once we have discussed this internally.

Let’s start with some simpler questions - what format was the point file that you were trying to load? How many points does it contain?

We discovered (and fixed internally for the upcoming Beta 21 build) a bug last week where a very large non-SPRT file would fail to preview via the Point Loader (in our case it had 3.5 billion points). However, it worked correctly when converted to SPRT via the Batch>Convert Point Files… dialog.

So let’s try this:

  • Start a new Sequoia session (launch Sequoia).
  • Drag&Drop the point file you wanted to load from the Windows Explorer into the viewport.
RESULT: A Convert Point Files dialog should open, with the selected point file in the dialog. Depending on the file format, you might need to provide additional info like channel mapping and unit scale (some formats like E57 will bring that info into the dialog automatically).
  • Press the Convert button and wait for the file to be converted to SPRT.

Once that is done, create a Point Loader like before and try loading the same file again - the SPRT cache found in the same folder will be loaded instead.

If this does not change anything, we will dig deeper.

Bobo,

Dragging a PTX file to Sequoia works. Thanks.

Please note that immediately after starting Sequoia and then clicking on “Creating a New POINT LOADER” soft button (first left on the top left ribbon), the program will crash at least on my Dell workstation. I can send you a screen captured movie clip, if you like.

I am based out of Vancouver and have a Leica P20 scanner. I would be glad to test and offer my constructive comments. I also have many sample point cloud data sets, which I can share.

I am new and please allow time to get familiarize with the software first.
