Shake and Deadline 2.0?

Can I use Deadline 2.0 to render Shake scripts across network?

Hi Ivan,

Deadline used to support Shake for Windows in the past, but since it’s been discontinued we’ve removed support from 2.0. Since Deadline is strictly Windows based at this point, we don’t support the later versions of Shake. However, we are in the early stages of porting Deadline to other OS’s, so you will definitely see support for Shake in the future.

Cheers,

:frowning: We are using shake 2.51 under windows platform. And i see shake plugin folder with some files in it (in plugins folder of repository). Can’t we use ones?

Ok, then you can use those files. They were included with previous versions of Deadline, so the Shake.deadline file might be out of date. You should copy the Script.deadline file from the Script plugin folder to the Shake folder, then rename the file to be Shake.deadline.

You can configure the Shake plugin from the Monitor. First, you must enter super user mode (Tools → Super User). Then select Tools → Plugin Configuration and select the Shake plugin from the list on the left. All you need to do is ensure the path to the Shake executable is correct.

There is no longer a submission dialog for shake, but I’m sure you could write one for the Monitor using vbscript. Check out the documentation here for how this can be done:

http://software.franticfilms.com/index.aspx?page=deadline/scripting

To submit the job, you will have to create a “job_info.job” file, which will contain the appropriate job information. Complete details on creating this file can be found here:

http://software.franticfilms.com/index.aspx?page=deadline/command/submissionfile#JobInfoFile

You do NOT need to create a “plugin_info.job” file. It’s not required for the Shake plugin.

Finally, to submit the job, use the command line:

DeadlineCommand.exe “path/to/job_info.job” “path/to/script.shk”

Note: You can use the Monitor submission dialog you create to setup the “job_info.job” file and submit the job to Deadline. Take a look at the other Monitor submission scripts to see how this is done. If you have any questions along the way, we’re here to help!

So a Mac friendly version of Deadline is a possibility then? Any idea of when that may be available?

Hi Chad,

We don’t have a concrete timeline yet, but as I mentioned earlier, we are in the early stages of porting. The ability to submit from and render on other OS’s is our first priority, and we’ll be looking for beta testers once we have something working. Let us know if you’re interested and we’ll put your name on the list.

We have about 10 Power Mac G5 workstations with Autodesk Maya and Apple Shake installed... and about 20 Mac mini render slaves. We use Apple Qmaster render manager for now. Can we help you to test Deadline for Mac OS X?
