Hi having a bit of trouble.
We just got a new slave and are trying to get it set up on the farm, but it is just sitting in idle. When it should be running with the other slaves. What are some possible causes of this? It definitely has the appropriate software installed on it.
There could be a few reasons why a slave won’t pick up a job:

I am having a problem similar to this. I am about to convert my entire farm to CentOS 5.2 with Maya 2k9 and deadline 3.0 sp1. I have all my windows machines working at the moment that are on the repository. The repository is on my NAS which is accessible both through NFS and CIFS. I have no problems connecting the CentOS box to the repository. I added the appropriate commands to the plugins for maya in the deadline manager.

I sent a few test jobs to deadline from maya2k9 and it worked for my windows xp box. The job was accepted fine and rendered. When i send it to only the CentOS box it doesnt come out of idle. The deadline manager says that its rendering but the deadlineslave doesnt have any output. I wish i could track what is going on but i have no logs. 
I checked all the things you recommended but no luck. What could i be doing wrong?

I just need a bit of clarification:
What doesn’t come out of idle, the job or the slave?
Do you mean that the Monitor is showing that the job is in the rendering state? Is it showing in the Task list that the slave that is rendering the task is the CentOS machine?
Is the job producing any errors, or does the task that the CentOS machine has seem to render indefinitely? If it’s the latter, can you send us a screenshot of the CentOS slave when it is supposed to be rendering? I’m curious to see what the slave is printing out.

The job comes out of idle, but the slave does not. The monitor shows that the job is rendering on the slave if i highlight the job itself. On the slave tab the slave does not show that it is rendering. When i am on the slave machine the slave client does not show anything has been sent to it.
I attached a screenshot to show what i mean.
There are not any errors. I kinda wish there were so i could attempt to diagnose the problem.

Actually, I was looking for a screenshot of the slave running on CentOS. 
And actually, a slave log from that machine would help too. Here’s the best way to get a clean slave log:
Restart the slave running on CentOS.
Submit a new Maya job to the farm.
Let the job get picked up to reproduce the problem you see in the Monitor in your screenshot.
Stop the slave on the CentOS machine.
Grab the most recent slave log out of /etc/Deadline/logs and post it.
I would imagine that the log would have some record of the slave grabbing that job at some point, otherwise the job wouldn’t have entered the rendering state - unless you’re running Pulse (let us know if this is the case).

I Let it run for a while. But it seems as though the slave just doesnt take the job. Then why would the monitor say that the job is rendering? I am not running pulse btw.

Try enabling slave verbose logging in the Repository Options in the Monitor. While in Super User Mode, select Tools -> Configure Repository Options, and scroll down to the Logging section. After enabling verbose logging, restart the slave and collect a fresh log again. Hopefully the additional logging will contain some more useful information.

This is really weird. From the Monitor screen shot, I’m gathering that this is the only slave running at the moment, right? Is at all possible that you have another slave running on the Linux box (ie: as part of another login session), or another slave running in a Virtual Machine with the same machine name? I know I’m grasping at straws here, but at the moment I can’t think of any other reasons why this would be happening.
No other linux boxes are set up as a deadline slave. It is confusing me as well. Nothing in the logs. The other slave in the repository is a windows slave just to test. My only thought was that i entered something in wrong in the Plugins folder. This is what i have entered:

Yeah, that looks fine. Even if there was a problem with this path, the slave log would have some record of the task getting picked up and failing the job because it couldn’t parse out the render executable path. I also don’t think it’s a share problem, because again, the slave should have some record of picking up the task. The only thing I can think of is that something else is picking up that task, but if you’re not running Pulse, and there are no other slaves, then I can’t think of what it would be. It’s definitely not the Monitor…
Do you have another Linux machine you can try installing the Deadline client on? Maybe it’s just an anomaly with this particular machine.
I can build a new one, it will take a bit to do from scratch. Do you recommend CentOS, Ubuntu Sever, or something else?
Maybe try ubuntu - we have tested Deadline with centos without any problems though, so it might not make a difference. At least if yo go with ubunu, we’re ruling out one possibility.
I am wiping my CentOS box and putting ubuntu 8.10 server on it to test if that will work. It should take a few hours. Ill write back as soon as i know it works or doesnt.
I got ubuntu 8.04 x86_64 server running with maya 2009 and deadline 3.0 sp1. Its rendering the job however i am now getting this error…

This problem appears to be fixed in our current working version, so it should be fixed in the next release. In the meantime, try disabling the Local Rendering option in the MayaCmd and MayaBatch plugin configuration to see if that helps for now.
