Just wanted to confirm, if a user sets up his own little desktop shortcut to the deadlinemonitor.exe, would that still trigger a self update? Or only through the launcher?

If you run deadlinemonitor.exe (or deadlineslave.exe) directly, it will not trigger an auto-update; you do indeed have to start it through the launcher. If they copy the shortcuts from the Start Menu, those should be using the launcher to start the apps and would obviously then work with auto-updates.
