Urgent: Farm error's on jobs submitted by one user

Every job submitted by someone here at the studio fails. I can open it. I can render it on my slave. But none of the render nodes can render. Even if I open the file, save it and close it (presumably making my machine the ‘submission’) machine it fails. If I submit the file though… it works. If I stop the service and simply run deadline slave in user space it works.

So conditions of failure are:

  1. dlange submits job.
  2. slave as service.

EDIT: Also as an addition, I’ve already had him re-install 3ds max and that did not fix the problem.

This is the issue:

Missing dll:  Built-in  - AnchorHelperObject

The missing DLL is part of State-Sets. I would double-check that all your machines are running ALL the latest SP’s & PU’s for the version of 3dsMax you are running. In particular, the PU’s fixed various issues for MAXScript and StateSets. See here for a CGSociety thread:

forums.cgsociety.org/archive/ind … 92456.html

StateSets effectively creates a small dummy near [0,0,0] in your scene, so if you delete this, the issue will be fixed. However, the real issue here, is potentially one of more of your machines is inconsistent in terms of configuration/SP/PU to your other machines.

HTH,
Mike

That was my first guess but we’ve SP’ed up to the latest on it. We also tried the reset state sets trick. But it doesn’t entirely explain why the job can be rendered through GUI but not services. We also see that warning pretty often on the farm but it doesn’t fail the render.

Perhaps StateSets looks at 1 or more of the user_profile specific settings/config files for 3dsMax for some purpose?

This would explain why it works fine under user account “Gavin” but perhaps user account “Renderfarm” (or whatever you call the NT service account) on one or more of your nodes has gone wrong. Can you flush out the user settings on a couple of nodes and test? If you re-installed 3dsMax on a troublesome machine + PU + SP’d up, this would explain why the issue is still there, if you are sure the actual scene file in question is ok on other machines in GUI rendering mode?

Alternatively, does StateSets make reference to any external file, to which the renderfarm user account might not have permission to access when in service mode?

However, the missing DLL does indicate that the machine which reported this error is actually missing this DLL in its 3dsMax directory. Are you sure this machine is up to date? If so, is it possible that the original StateSets were created in an earlier version of 3dsMax, referencing an older version of this DLL and perhaps, this 3dsMax scene file you have, is an update project for a client and you are rendering this previously created max file in a newer version of 3dsMax?

ie: if you know what version it was originally created in, can you render it through this version OR delete the SceneState and re-create it from scratch, hence referencing the newer DLL version?

Well, that’s the rub. There are no state sets at all in this scene. So they can’t be referencing something since they don’t exist.

Both gui and rendernodes use the same renderadmin account. Although looking at the logs I do notice that the error messages say:

 Error loading file C:/Users/renderadmin.SFS/AppData/Local/Thinkbox/Deadline6/slave/RENDER-I7-08/jobsData/52376f4814cfd321ac2a4f3b/L3Q_INT_MP0070_PRVZ_A01.01.max
Executing script: C:\Users\renderadmin\AppData\Local\Thinkbox\Deadline6\slave\RENDER-I7-06\plugins\52377cdbb5b7e109d072e477\customize.ms

So there is a subtle difference “renderadmin.SFS” vs “renderadmin”.

But there is no such directory as C:/Users/renderadmin.sfs/ so maybe that’s just a log typo. And if it is then there should be no difference in the user accounts.

I assume SFS is your domain name, renderadmin.SFS is a domain user account and renderadmin may be a local account only? You would need to check with your local IT to how your domain and user accounts are configured. This user account should be using one or the other, but not both!

Looks like State Sets don’t work when 3dsMax is run as a background service…ADSK bug…see here:

binaryalchemy.de/forum/viewt … 90435339e5

Good sleuthing. That must be it. So the scenes from this user must be forcing Max into thinking that there is a state set even when there isn’t which then crashes the scene. But that doesn’t make sense entirely because we have rendered scenes with state sets before. :confused:

Unfortunately I am our local IT who setup all that. :smiley: But there is no local renderadmin account. And if I log in remotely I use the same credentials as the service uses. There’s also no \users\renderadmin.sfs\ folder even while the service is running… so I think that might be an odd red herring.

Can I see this Max file? I really think there is a reference in there somewhere…

Here’s another one time link.

OK, think I may have something. Looks like StateSet (which now stores its information within the Max file) may not like it when its dialog size/position is changed between machines with dual monitors and between 2 artists that have different monitor setups…ie: StateSet dialog is on left monitor for user 1 and it’s on the righthand monitor for user 2, who are both sharing the same file. Looks like something is getting corrupted internally in the Max file when its saved - it’s there every time I re-open the file!

This would maybe explain the rubbish pop-up error message “3ds Max Message” not having any text/words describing which element of Max its popping up for…

When I open your file and open StateSets I see this:

If I then do a reset of the monitor layout, all seems to be ok:

These settings seem to be stored in a user profile specific location under “max_root/en-US/plugcfg/”

So, if you BOTH reset the monitor layout until it looks ‘normal’ in the StateSet UI AND then click on the “Reset State Sets” option AND then submit to Deadline?

Maybe fixed? :slight_smile:

@Gavin - How goes it? - Fixed?

Testing… appears to be fixed.

Hmmm… now to plot a way to universally standardize that across the farm. I wonder if taking one of the workstation’s config files and distributing it to the render nodes might fix it…

I spent quite a bit of time last night trying to find a solution like this for you…however, the corruption is within the actual Max file…so unless we can proactively trace where the error occurs and stop it in it’s tracks with something like a callback script within your workstations startup.ms, then unfortunately it’s gonna be a manual fix on each file you encounter this issue with…(my best guess is that StateSets are created on a workstation with the monitors the other way round and then submitted from another workstation…you might be able to test this theory if you want…)

I wonder if Bobo knows a MXS command to execute the “reset window layout” in the StateSets…I couldn’t find one in the documentation…

Perhaps, the new Max2014 SP3 (40+ fixes) contains a solution to this issue? If not, then I would recommend reporting this bug officially to ADSK…it’s all quite frustrating!

This seems to work. But if you actually have state sets this solution will nuke your existing state sets. Although I don’t think I’ve ever had this problem on a scene that actually was using state sets.

manager = dotNetObject "Autodesk.Max.StateSets.Plugin" manager.ResetAndDelete()

Nope. This will reset any StateSet data ONLY (also creating a pop-up dialog to confirm the first time, which will need suppressing. Even more effort to get this sorted) OR reset the actual configuration. Again, this isn’t what needs to happen here. We need to reset the actual monitor layout config embedded in the file here. There isn’t a command to achieve this!

nor does this do anything useful:

stateSetsDotNetObject = dotNetObject "Autodesk.Max.StateSets.Plugin" stateSets = stateSetsDotNetObject.Instance stateSets.EntityManager.RootEntity.MasterStateSet.Reset()

So, I would go back to ADSK and log a formal bug as ultimately they need to get this fixed if it’s not already resolved? SP3?

Also, resetting the dialog position via dotNet doesn’t ‘reset’ the form layout either. The layout & stateset configuration is stored in a config file here:

C:\max_install_location\en-US\plugcfg\Autodesk.Max.State Sets.config

If you set BOTH these 2 settings to FALSE (highlighted in green), then the problem shouldn’t occur again. BUT, this isn’t the solution to this issue! ADSK need to fix the bug! Also, this will disable your 3dsMax from storing any StateSet information inside of your Max files which is no good, if you want to use them!

What would be good, is if you can find the pattern to replicate the issue at source. ie: when user X saves Max file with StateSet UI open with monitors in LEFT-RIGHT config and then user Y tries to open the file and/or submit it to the farm…If we had a repeatable pattern then it would be easy to submit it as a bug to ADSK.

Regards,
Mike
