Vray and cropped render

Hi All,

Has anyone else experienced problems when rendering a region using vray on deadline. The region crop works with MR over deadline and it works with VR when rendering on a local pc. However when you select to render over Deadline with Vray it always ignores the region/crop and renders the full frame. I am selecting the crop from the deadline menu too.

Did you have VRay’s VFB enabled with raw/split RE output? Does crop/region work ok when VFB is disabled? If so, this is fixed in a newer version of Deadline. Can you upgrade to 7.2.1.10?

I can upgrade probably, but I need to render the crop for a fairly quick job. Is there a temporary way around this? Can I disable the VFB?

Is disabling the VRay VFB a workable short term solution for you? Please give it a test and let us know how you get on.

Hmm, nope, disabling the VFB didn’t work. nether did updating to 7.2. How frustrating. Any other suggestions? I can try updating to vray 3.3 tomorrow, but that will be too late.

This is very strange. Can you post a full job report of it failing to work correctly in VRay and another one where it works fine in Scanline or Mental Ray. We can then compare the differences and see if anything stands out.

That is odd, now it looks like it’s not working in MR either. I am selecting the correct settings aren’t I?

If I just do a quick render on my local PC, it renders the crop just fine.

Any ideas or things to try?

If you render through a camera and select “view” in the render scene dialogue, does it work?

Stupid question: Is “3DS MAX REGION Rendering - Single Job, Frames As Tasks” selected in the “Tiles & Region Rendering Options” rollout’s drop-down list? It is not visible in the screenshot. However, when it is selected, the last rollout will read “ACTIVE: 3ds Max Region Rendering”, something that does not appear in the posted image.

The checkbox “Use 3ds Max Region” simply tells SMTD what values to use, but to ENABLE the region rendering, the drop-down list must be set, otherwise any other Max settings will be ignored. It defaults to “FULL FRAME Rendering, All Region Options DISABLED”. The Render Dialog settings are totally overwritten by Deadline, so no need to set that option to “Crop” at all.

We had to do this because we have to support 4 region rendering modes (single frame Jigsaw multi-region rendering, animatged Jigsaw, single frame Tiles, animation Tiles, and 3ds Max Region). So having a central control in one list (plus the full frame / disable region option) makes sure you cannot enable two or more of them at the same time and cause unexpected collisions…

I never knew that you had to tick both use 3ds max region and then also change that dropdown. Rather than a drop down in another section, I think this should be within the 3DS max crop tab. Seems like its not massively intuitive to have to choose all your crop settings in 3DS dialogue, then change that dropdown in one tab then also tick use 3ds region in another.

Alot of things to remember to do in different menus just for such a small requirement.

No, you got that wrong. There is nothing you need to set in the 3ds Max Render Settings. You don’t have to set the Crop in that dialog. ALL you need to do is:

  • Open SMTD

  • Click the Tiles tab - note that by default it is set to FULL FRAME, and all other rollouts are collapsed.

  • Select “3DS MAX REGION Rendering…” from the list - note that the “ACTIVE: 3ds Max Region Rendering” rollout will pop up automatically, and any of the other rollouts will roll up if they were expanded for some reason. If you switch the list, all rollouts go up and down as needed, so you never have to deal with opening or closing them.

  • In the SMTD rollout “ACTIVE: 3ds Max Region Rendering”, you select the mode you want - “Crop” in your case. The name of the rollout will change to “ACTIVE: 3ds Max Crop Region Rendering”! (See, I spent a lot of time on this and like attention to details :wink: )

  • You can now either
    [list] [*] Enter the X, Y, Width and Height manually

  • Check the “Show Region Gizmo” and use the SMTD own manipulator to adjust the region interactively - it will update the values in the rollout dynamically;

  • Or check “Use 3ds Max Region” which will get the last values set via the 3ds Max Region gizmo or Configure Viewport > Region settings tab. If you manipulated those settings outside of SMTD, pressing the “Update Region Values” button will refresh SMTD’s values to match the 3ds Max ones.

If you would submit now, even if the 3ds Max Render Setup dialog is still set to “View”, Deadline will still render the region specified in the SMTD dialog, because we enforce our own region rendering settings via the Job Info. Some of the other advanced modes like Jigsaw and Tiles do crazy things with the regions, and we cannot rely on 3ds Max’ own puny single region definition to do the job :wink:

Note that a few years ago, the rendering of the 3ds Max region was actually enabled via a checkbox in the “3ds Max Region Rendering” rollout, which automatically unchecked the “Render Tiles” checkbox in the other rollout if it was checked. However, when we added “Jigsaw Mutli-Region rendering” which lets you define any number of regions, subdivide some of them into sub-regions to split between machines, and even animate regions over time to track moving objects, we felt that a single location to select one of the 6 modes would be a cleaner solution. Plus all the rollouts open and close automagically when you select from the list, so it should be theoretically a breeze…
