What licenses do I need?

Hi,

I am trying to use the “Render to texture” or “Texture Baking” feature in Deadline and 3Ds Max (See link below). I also want to use AWS render nodes instead of my local machine(s).

https://docs.thinkboxsoftware.com/products/deadline/10.0/1_User%20Manual/manual/app-3ds-max-workflow-baketextures.html#

What I have done so far:

  • Ive purchased 50 hours of 3Ds Max render time on the thinkbox marketplace.
  • Ive started an amazon spot fleet, registred an AWS account etc.

I see this in my slavelog if I have more than two slaves:

02:  License path:  C:\flexlm\license.dat;
2018-12-19 10:13:02: FlexNet Licensing error:-1,359. System Error: 2 "No such file or directory"
2018-12-19 10:13:02: For further information, refer to the FlexNet Licensing documentation,
2018-12-19 10:13:02:  available at "www.flexerasoftware.com".

When I start the AWS fleet and get a slave up and running it cant complete any of my jobs due to some licensing error.

Also I can not find “3Ds Max” in the list of “UBL applications” inside the limits pannel.

There is alot of confusion now. I look at the marketplace and see Deadline, 3DsMax and VRay licenses. The slave log pasted above tells me to go to “flexerasoftware”. The amazon fleet is draining money just by running it.

Which licenses do I need from the thinkbox marketplace? Any help is appreciated.

Hey Douglas,

To render 3ds Max on AWS you will need Deadline, and 3ds Max licensing. You will also need renderer licensing for example V-Ray if you are using it. Currently you are receiving a Deadline licensing error, you will need to purchase Deadline UBL to get around this error or have a maximum of two slaves in the Slave panel to be in license free mode.

To confirm, you are using AWS Portal in this setup? Our Autodesk UBL products only work with AWS Portal.

Charles

Thank you for your response.

Yes, I am using the AWS Portal.

Im a bit unsure what to do with the purchased UBLs.

I cant see neither Deadline or 3DMax in the list of UBLs in the “limtis panel -> new license limit”. Do I need to create limits using my purchased UBLs?

Should I put the deadline license in the folder mentioned in the log?
02: License path: C:\flexlm\license.dat;

I also have a folder of certs in /DeadlineDatabase10/certs/ for the database.

Hey Douglas,

Deadline UBL works a bit differently than the Third Party UBL products. Deadline UBL does not require a limit and will not be included in the limits panel.

For UBL you do not need to use C:\flexlm\license.dat. You certificates should be collected in a single directory and specified in the AWS Portal Settings > Advanced > Usage-Based Licensing Certificate Directory.

Instructions for setting up Licensing for AWS Portal can be found here:

https://docs.thinkboxsoftware.com/products/deadline/10.0/1_User%20Manual/manual/aws-portal/usage-based-licensing.html#aws-portal-usage-based-licensing-ref-label

If “max” has not shown up in the limits panel then the Infrastructures License Forwarder has not connected to your farm. You can confirm this by going to View > New Panel > License Forwarders. There should be an idle License Forwarder connected when you have an infrastructure running.

If this is not connected we will want to checkout the AWS Portal Link log to make sure that it is establishing a connection to the AWS Infrastructure.
