xmesh - velocity export?

Hi,

we just tested the xmesh saver for maya, especially in combination with the DMM plugin.
We were able to export a sequence of frames of a deforming mesh with changing topology but discovered problems concerning motion blur. Does the XMeshSaver for Maya export velocity information? We had problems of getting motion blur right when importing the meshes into 3dsmax. The default loading mode Frame Velocity Offset didn’t give motion blur, the option nearest Frame Velocity Offset worked only occasionally. Do we maybe need special shutter settings (Vray) to get it to work or is velocity information something yet to implement?

Thanks very much in advance,
Sebastian Schäfer

The current XMesh Saver for Maya does not export velocity. However, we are planning to release a new build that does export velocity this week or next week.

Is this urgent for you? We may be able to get a build to you sooner if you need it.

Many thanks for getting back to us about it so quickly. The missing velocity export could potentially solve a specific pipeline problem for us. If it’s possible to get it soon, we would much appreciate it.

Best,
Sebastian Schäfer

Velocity saving is in XMesh for Maya 0.3.

Beware that this build is not backward compatible. However, older versions of the plugin can load xmesh files written by this new build. So, depending on your circumstances, you may want to install this new build on the saving machine only.

That’s great news. Thanks a lot!

Hi Paul, thanks for your quick response and release of this new version.
We were able to export an object from maya to max with velocity
information, however encountered following problem, seemingly because of
swapped axes. Here’s what we did:

We tried to export a cube in worldspace with velocity from maya to max.
The cube’s transform was not animated, but it’s vertices.
First we animated the vertices in the positive x axis. This resulted in
max in a subframe movement in positive x, which is fine.
Then we moved them in positive y, which should result in a movement in
positive z, but was negative y.
Then we moved them in positive z, which should result in a movement in
negative y, but was negative z.

Interestingly the motion blur of the cube also looked wrong when
exporting the cube from maya and importing it back to it.
the resulting movements have been like that:
+x animation: resulted in +x
+y animation: resulted in +z
+z animation: resulted in -y
(which looks like a prepared export to max?)

Is it possible to change the velocity information via Genome? We tried
that but haven’t found velocity in the channel list…

Thanks again for this quick build!

Cheers,
Sebastian Schäfer

Thank you for letting us know! We will look into this.

No, I don’t believe it’s possible to change the velocity using Genome now.

This should be fixed in Maya XMesh 0.3.2.

Thank you,
Sebastian Schäfer

works perfectly - thanks for the quick fix.

Cheers,
Sebastian

That’s great to hear, thank you for letting us know!
