Deadline 10 and 3ds Max Submit Error

My company just started using Deadline at one of the users request. It has been working really well for Maya but 3Ds Max seems to be giving us a lot of trouble. Our designers send over jobs and they fail immediately with a 3Ds Max startup error which can be seen in the log below. The only thing I can find about the error is that it relates to IPv6 but I have verified that all of my machines have IPv6 disabled. Any help from the community is greatly appreciated. Some of the information in the log has been removed for confidentiality.

Can you try and run the following on the node from a command prompt? You’ll have to change “c:\path\to” to the real path of the file though.

Quick glance, it looks like it needs a file type/extension? Unless render is the folder you want, then you probably need a file prefix to output to. Take a look at what’s in the render settings and see if it’s just missing there.

It seems that if I go back to all of the failed jobs and run the full command in command prompt on a render node it works just fine.

Shouldn’t you be rendering the output to some shared location? It could be that the USERNAME user doesn’t have that folder on their desktop. It’ll also be a pain trying to harvest those frames from each render node.

That was just me generalizing the report. The user submitting the render had full access and that was just a test. So far Maya is still working just fine and the renders for 3DS Max continue to fail. When I run the full 3DS Max command on the node it via command line it works perfectly.

Have you restarted the machine since updating to the latest 3dsMax version and installing the Populate data? If still not working, then looks to be a difference between rendering it in the command prompt vs. running as a service. Can you re-install Deadline client (simply re-run the installer on the machine and don’t choose to install as a client) to then temporarily run it in GUI mode. Does it render then?

I have rebooted after install and reinstall but no luck. After putting Deadline in GUI mode it was able to render without any issues. This is a bit inconvenient since I cannot remain logged into each node. What do you think the issue might be? It is odd that only 3DS Max is having this issue.

I would switch back to “3dsmax” plugin to see if anything new is dumped to StdOut/Err. Try removing the Slave GPU affinity override you have set, as per message in your log:

Apart from V-Ray renderer plugin, can you list out all 3rd plugins & scripts that have been installed/being used here. I suspect one of them is crashing as 3dsMax boots up. As Max is crashing before it even gets to open your scene file… Are these plugins/scripts all Max 2018.4 compatible?

I removed the GPU affinity override. I had this on since I split each node into two slaves. Here is the failure log. The only plugin installed on this node is V-Ray. With GPU affinity override on, running in GUI mode worked on both the primary and secondary slave on a single node.

Hmmm…very odd. Can you try enabling the “Kill ADSK WSCommCntr*.exe” option in the 3dsmax plugin config, via “Configure Plugins…” in Monitor and see if that helps. Also, could you post an identical job log report of when the Slave successfully runs in GUI mode. Then we can compare and see if anything stands out as being different here.

Looks to be a possible access/permissions issue difference between the GUI user and the service account. Does the service account have admin rights? Also, are all these binary executables allowed through the local Windows firewall?

I have finally found a fix for the issue. What I had to do was delete the service account user folder and registry key. Reboot, login with the service account the first time and run 3ds Max. Once that was done I could reset the Deadline service and assign it back to starting up with my service account. After that it started working. What I learned is that unlike Maya, 3DS Max cannot run two renders on the same node. Even with the fix in place, running secondary slaves on the same nodes were failing to start 3DS Max. What I did was split 3DS Max into a separate pool so my design team only sends jobs for 3DS Max to one slave per node. Those that need Maya could call a separate pool and when the Max pool was not in use we can assign it to the Maya renders to decrease job times.
